Maternal diet and the effect on the unborn child

Published on: Author: Healthy Dynamic

Maternal diet can have a direct impact on the health of the baby and food habits/choices made into adulthood. Recent animal research has shown that a high sugar and fat diet during pregnancy and breast feeding can de-sensitize the opioid receptors in the offspring, meaning the individual needs to eat more of these types of food to get the same ‘feel good response’. This desensitization of the receptors can lead to the over-eating of these foods and the development of associated risks such as obesity and chronic disease.
